About OUBbC
A brief history
Oxford has been playing basketball since 1893 — two years after the sport was invented.
The first Varsity match against Cambridge was held in 1921, making it the oldest basketball competition still played in the United Kingdom. Basketball earned Full Blue status in 1966.
The club has won 19 national championships, including 3 ABBA titles (1956, 1966, 1968), 14 BUSF titles, and 5 BUCS titles, most recently the BUCS League Championship in 2022. Notable alumni include NBA player and US Senator Bill Bradley (Men's Blues, 1965–67) and former US President Bill Clinton (Men's Twos, 1968–69).
Today OUBbC trains at Acer Nethercott Sports Hall, part of the Iffley Road Sports Centre — home of the Sir Roger Bannister running track. The club fields six teams: Men's Blues, Twos and Threes, Women's Blues and Twos, and the Oxford Kites wheelchair team, involving around 300 students across club and college-level basketball each year.
Our vision
OUBbC's committees have spent years quietly building one of Oxford's most successful sports clubs — but the club is now at its largest ever, and we're looking beyond year-to-year survival toward long-term security. Our five-year plan focuses on financial resilience, training and equipment upgrades, international competition, and making the club more accessible to every student who wants to play.
